Running a promotion on Twitter

Age Restriction

To sign up to Twitter you must be at least 13 years of age. As a result, any promotion run on Twitter must be open to persons of at least 13 years old.

You can choose to increase the age limit for entry e.g. 18yrs+. A higher age limit may be required based on the product and prize advertised e.g. if promoting an alcohol product it must be 18yrs+.

Twitter Contest Guidelines

Twitter requires that any competition run on Twitter complies with their Twitter Contest Guidelines, which outlines that competitions must:

  • Discourage the creation of multiple accounts e.g. include a general rule stating that anyone found to use multiple accounts will be deemed invalid

  • Discourage posting the same Tweet repeatedly: e.g. whoever retweets this the most wins is not a permitted mechanic. Twitter recommends setting clear contest rules stating that multiple entries in a single day will not be accepted

  • Ask entrants to include the promoter's account as a 'mention' in their tweet in order for you to search for their entry

  • Hashtag requested to be used must be relevant to the competition topic. If the hashtag is unrelated it will be in breach of the Twitter guidelines

  • Must comply with the general Twitter Rules
